NIPD Genetics launches Adventia, a proprietary carrier screening test of up to 229 genetic diseases of moderate to severe significance.
July 6th, 2020 Nicosia, Cyprus: NIPD Genetics has launched Adventia, an expanded carrier screening test for any individual or couple who wish to know whether they are a carrier of a genetic disease. Adventia is a safe, accurate and proprietary test for up to 229 autosomal recessive and X-linked diseases, and provides healthcare practitioners and individuals with genetic insight and valuable information regarding their reproductive options. It is built on NIPD Genetics’s proprietary and patented technology platform that has been validated in several studies and is trusted for its accuracy and precision.
International genetic organizations like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) recommend carrier screening for the most serious and prevalent genetic diseases (Cystic Fibrosis, Spinal Muscular Atrophy) is offered to everyone planning to start a family. Additionally, several professional organizations like the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC), Perinatal Quality Foundation (PQF) and the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine (SMFM) also agree that while carrier screening for certain diseases should be offered in an ethnicity basis or based on family history, information about carrier screeningshould beoffered to all pregnant women.
Prof. Philippos Patsalis, Founder and CEO of NIPD Genetics, stated that “Carriers of autosomal recessive or X-linked diseases do not exhibit any symptoms and may be unaware of their carriers status and the possible risk of having a child who is affected. Knowing one’s carrier status allows them to evaluate their reproductive options and minimize the risk of transmitting a genetic disease to their children.”
Adventia consists of 3 panels; (a) Focus Panels that offer the choice to test one out of six high-frequency and moderate to severe monogenic diseases (A-Thalassemia, B-Haemoglobinopathies, Cystic Fibrosis, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Fragile X); (b) the Guidelines-Based Panel, which includes all diseases in the Focus Panels, tests for 19 diseases with high carrier frequency that are recommended by international genetic organizations like the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG); (c) the Comprehensive Panel includes all diseases of the Guidelines-Based Panel, testing a total of 229 diseases characterized by a well-defined phenotype and high cumulative frequency. The Comprehensive Panel includes cardiovascular, metabolic, muscular and immunological diseases among many others.
Adventia is performed through a simple buccal swab. The sample is sent from the healthcare provider to NIPD Genetics central laboratories for analysis, and results are sent back to the healthcare provider through a secure portal within 2-3 weeks of sample receipt to the laboratory. Adventia reports on pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants and tests for all coding exons on the gene of interest, thereby offering a wider coverage of areas harbouring mutations, and increasing the sensitivity and specificity of the test.
Adventia can offer healthcare providers and individuals, couples or prospective parents the chance to learn whether they are carriers of a genetic disease, evaluate their options and take informed decisions regarding minimizing the risk of transmitting a genetic disease to their children.
