Nicosia, Cyprus Dec 2019: NIPD Genetics’ Non-Invasive Prenatal Test, VERAgene, was awarded the Innovation Award for the Manufacturing Sector by the Cyprus Innovation Awards at a special ceremony on 12 of December 2019, in Nicosia. The event was hosted by OBE at the Hilton Park, Nicosia and was attended by industry leaders and political dignitaries. The awards were given by Mr Demetris Syllouris, President of the House of Representatives and Presiding Officer of the Republic of Cyprus.
VERAgene is the first comprehensive Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT) for aneuploidies, microdeletions and monogenic diseases. It is built on NIPD Genetics’ powerful proprietary technology platform that has been validated in several studies and is trusted for its accuracy and precision. VERAgene was launched by NIPD Genetics in 2018 and is currently offered beyond the boundaries of Cyprus and Greece, in over 30 European and Asian countries.
NIPD Genetics’s Founder and CEO, Prof. Philippos Patsalis when receiving the award stated “This award belongs to the entire NIPD Genetics team. Εverything we accomplish is a result of collective effort and teamwork. I would like to sincerely thank each and everyone of them for the expertise, excellence, passion and hard work they show everyday.”
VERAgene is a safe, accurate and cost-effective genetic test that identifies whether there is a risk for the fetus to have an aneuploidy, a microdeletion or a monogenic disease from the tested panel. The diseases screened by VERAgene are moderate to severe with significant impact on the quality of life. By combining detection of aneuploidies and microdeletions with the screening of monogenic disorders, VERAgene provides a comprehensive picture of the pregnancy using a single test. Unlike aneuploidies, microdeletions and single gene diseases do not have an age associated risk. Importantly, most of them do not have chemical or ultrasound biomarkers that can help in early detection. VERAgene can accurately screen for these conditions with higher than 99% sensitivity to help parents take informed decisions about possible treatments and clinical management.
Prof. Patsalis added that “VERAgene NIPT will soon be expanded to analyse 100 single gene autosomal recessive and X-linked conditions. These will include hematological, renal, ophthalmological, cardiac, endocrine, respiratory, neurological, muscular and metabolic diseases”
The valuable information provided by VERAgene will allow healthcare providers and prospective parents to take informed decisions regarding prognosis, prevention, better clinical management and therapy.
