Dr Elisavet A. Papageorgiou |

Dr Elisavet A. Papageorgiou was born in Cyprus in 1981. She obtained her BSc degree in Biology from the Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. She continued her studies in obtaining an MSc degree in Human Molecular Genetics from Imperial College, University of London, London, UK. In 2010, Dr Papageorgiou completed her PhD in Human Genetics at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics in collaboration with the Sanger Institute in Cambridge, UK. Since then she has been working as a postdoc in the Department of Cytogenetics and Genomics at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics. During her PhD and Postdoc studies she specialized and gained extensive experience in the field of Non-Invasive Prenatal Diagnosis (NIPD). In 2007, as a PhD student, she was given an award for the best scientific work in NIPD by the SAFE consortium funded by the 6th framework program of the European Union. She was also awarded the Panos Ioannou Young Scientists Award 2008 by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics. She is co-inventor of the new NIPD test for Down Syndrome, the work of which has been published in the prestigious journal Nature Medicine. A U.S. patent application has also been filed under the name of Prof Patsalis and Dr Papageorgiou to protect the invention. Dr Papageorgiou is also co-founder of NIPD Genetic LTD and she will be responsible for the development and production of NIPD tests.
